Charles E. Ledford 83, Sgt. Major USMC Retired, passed away at his home, Friday, October 11, 2024 due to heart complications.
Charles was born October 1, 1941, (the first child of the late -Isaac and Ruth Ledford of Spruce Pine, NC). He was preceded in death by 3 siblings: Leonard Ray Ledford-(brother), Betty Jean Duncan- (sister) and Patricia Elaine Ledford- (sister). He was also preceded by: wife- Sandra Fewer and son-Charles Chuck Ledford. and by the Love of his life, wife: Pamela Fabian Ledford. (who took in a Desperado and changed into a kinder and gentler man.
Surviving to hold the memory of Charles are: sister- Annette Harwell (Gene) of Hickory, NC, brother-Robert Lewis Ledford of Bakersville, NC, brother-Clayton Barry Ledford, Forest City, NC., and by a significant number of nieces, nephews, cousins, an aunt, and numerous special friends angels.
After graduating from Harris High School in Spruce Pine, NC, he joined the Marine Corps on 29 May 1959. During his career, the Sergeant Major served with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Marine Divisions, the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, and a tour with the Recruit Depot Parris Island.
Sergeant Major Ledford’s assignments have included First Sergeant of Company “C”, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, Sergeant Major of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115, Sergeant Major of Marine Air Control Squadron Five, and his last assignment as Sergeant Major of Women Recruit Training Command. Among his decorations and awards are; Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V”, Navy Achievement Medal Contact ”V” Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with 5 stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
A memorial graveside service for Charlie will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at Beaufort National Cemetery with United States Marine Corps honors.
Brother Charlie finished life as a kind, generous, compassionate man, his dedication to volunteer work with The Lending Room here in Beaufort has touched many lives. Charlie lived on his own terms with honor, courage, and a loyalty of love for his family and heritage. Apples, green beans, and of course his BOATS of fishing kept him motivated for many years. There is more to say but this ending is yet another beginning.
