IN MEMORY OF ALAN MILES COOPER
MARCH 11, 1926 - DECEMBER 2, 2014
FRIPP ISLAND, SC -Alan Miles Cooper, 88, passed away December 02, 2014 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Al was born March 11, 1926 in Plainfield, NJ to the late Georgina Hough and William Blair Cooper. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother, W. Blair Cooper.
At the early age of 17 he joined the US Navy and spent four years serving on the USS Anderson D-411. His time on this Destroyer was in the Pacific during WWII.
Shortly after being discharged from the Navy he started his life long career with Research-Cottrell, an air pollution control company in Somerville, NJ. During these thirty-six years he was in NJ and Denver, CO before transferring to Sharpsburg, NC where he started a plant for the NJ based Company. During this time he attended Rutgers University.
In Rocky Mount, NC was where he met his wife of thirty-two years, Theresa Henson Cooper. Al's business activities there revolved around Plant Manager's Association, United Way and Lion's Club. Recreational activities of golf, swimming and tennis were at Northgreen Country Club. Al and Tee retired to Fripp Island, SC in 1985 where they have enjoyed living on the coast, playing golf and boating activities.
Al was active for years with the Fripp Island Fire Department Volunteer Group, Fripp Island Yacht Club, 18 Hole Men's Golf Association, Fripp Island Community Centre and All Faiths Chapel where he served several years as President as well as other positions on the Board. His other joy in the Lowcountry was the years of partnership in Johnson Creek Tavern serving as the greeter.
Left to cherish his memory is his family: daughters, Kathy Kwiatkowski (Stan) and Barbara Murphy (Tom) of New Port Richey, FL; five grandchildren, Diane Baker (Kurt), Amy Luce (Jamie), Keith Kwiatkowski (Sarah), Megan Parris (Jason) and Bridget Mengel (Brett), all who live in Florida; also six great-grandchildren with two more expected soon; sister-in-law, Anne O'Neil (Harry) of Bullard, TX; three nephews and one niece. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 20th at 11:00AM at the Fripp Island All Faiths Chapel with a reception immediately following the service at the Community Centre where the family will receive friends. An Episcopalian of seventy years it was Al's wishes to be cremated and his ashes interned in the Fripp Island Columbarium which he played an active part in establishing during one of his terms of office.
