PORT ROYAL, SOUTH CAROLINA -Alexander John "Alex" Wierzbicki, 88, of Port Royal, widower of Mildred Wierzbicki, died Thursday, March 29, 2012 at River Oaks. Alex was born in Lansing, Ohio to Walter and Mary Wierzbicki. During World War II, Alex was a welder repairing war ships at the Portsmouth Naval Yard from 1942 until 1945. In 1946, Alex was a mechanic with Valley Camp Coal Company until retiring in 1984. He has been a member of the United Mine Workers of America since 1946. Alex's hobbies included duck hunting and large gardens. Alex is survived by a son, Walter Wierzbicki and his wife, Gayle, of Beaufort, SC; a daughter, Cindy Keenan of Port Royal, SC; grandchildren, Ashley Wierzbicki of Columbia SC, Whitney Wierzbicki of Rock Hill SC, Alex Wierzbicki of Beaufort SC, and Kris Keenan of Clearwater, FL. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday evening, March 30, 2012, at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive. The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, March 31, 2012, at the graveside, Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
