Alice G. Wehrhan

d. May 16, 2013

LADY'S ISLAND - Alice G. Wehrhan, born September 8, 1928 in Bunslau, Germany, passed away peacefully at home on Lady's Island, S.C. at 1:10 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2014. Diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2008, Alice lived in her final years with a progressive brain degeneration which gradually took away her memories of all she once knew. Living with her son and daughter-in-law, her son, Roland DuBay, was at her bedside at the time of her passing. Alice had also been receiving in-home hospice care from Hospice Care of South Carolina for nearly three months prior to her passing, with regular care visits from Nurse Ginger and nurse assistant Andrea.

Alice was the daughter of the late Maximilian B?rke and the late Frieda Finger B?rke of Germany. A post-WW II bride she was married to the late Charles J. DuBay of Maine, and later remarried to the late Paul Wehrhan of Oklahoma. She lived for many years in Sacramento, California, where she was employed by Campbell's Soup in the cannery division, alongside her husband, Paul. During those years she enjoyed motorcycle riding on the back of Paul's Harley-Davidson, cruising to Bodega Bay in their mobile home, fishing, and generally enjoying the beauty of nature. She had a strong vice-like grip from years of cannery work.

Alice was an avid contributor to many organizations, including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans, and a host of other organizations that would send her appeals in the mail. She could never refuse them. She was a collector of stuffed animals, T-shirts, and a paraphernalia of things sent to her by non-profit organizations. She loved music, especially country (Willie Nelson was a favorite) and gospel. Alice had the heart of a ballerina who loved to dance in her younger years.

She was also a member of the Beaufort Church of the Nazarene, where although she suffered from Alzheimer's, she still remembered how to hum the music to Rock of Ages and Amazing Grace.

Alice is survived by her only son, Roland DuBay and his wife, Janice, of Beaufort, SC; sister Luzie C. Arnold of Columbia, SC and brother Volkhard B?rke of Germany; one grandchild, Jennifer, one great-grandchild, Aaron, and; many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service and celebration will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning, March 28, 2014, in the chapel at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive in Beaufort, with burial following in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
