Barbara Alene Cooper was called home at the glorious age of 87 years old on July 10, 2023. Born May 3, 1936, in Chapmanville, West Virginia, she embraced Beaufort as her earthly home in 1954.
She was predeceased by her parents, Golden and Bertha (Lucas) Huffman; brothers James and Golden Jr (Peewee) Huffman, sisters Bonnie Shelton Johnson, and Patricia Caudill; son Allen Holbrook and great-grandson Cade Moyer. She is survived by husband Bert Cooper; daughters Janette Moyer (Chuck) and Teresa Baker (Mark); son James Holbrook (Veda); sister Helen Bennett, fourteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many other children she mentored and loved through the years.
She loved God, her country, her family, and her friends. She loved caring for house plants and was blessed with an angelic voice which she joyfully shared with audiences around the Lowcountry. Barbara knew her health was declining and in the last year spoke often of her departure as “flying away home,” not as merely dying. She was ready to go to her Heavenly home, and her greatest hope for her family and friends was they would get their flying wings ready to join her one day.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 16, 2023 at Port Royal Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm. with burial to follow in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
