Barbara Jean Seguin

February 24, 1938 — June 3, 2023

In the earlier hours of June 3, 2023, Barbara Jean Seguin passed away peacefully in her sleep.

Barbara was born in Oswego, New York on February 24, 1938 to Harry and Marion Pospesel.

Barbara graduated from the Akron General Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She joined the hospital nursing staff and formed lifelong friendships with her fellow graduates. Barb loved being a nurse and helping people. She continued her career, at Akron General Medical Center, as a hospital administrator until her retirement. Barb was most proud of the relationship she had with her department professionals, their dedication to one another and the work.

In 1994, Barbara married her love, Francois “Frank” W. Seguin, M.D. In 1999, they both retired and moved from snowy Akron, Ohio to sunny Beaufort, SC where they built a happy life together on Dataw Island.

Barb loved the SC Lowcountry and embraced the local culture by joining the Hunting Island Sea Turtle Conservation Project, as well as, restoring the downtown Verdier Garden to its prior glory and she was a member of the Dataw Garden Club. Barbara was a member of Saint Peter’s Catholic Church and especially loved the choir.
Barb also loved, the NC Outer Banks, waves crashing, watching her SC bluebirds going in/out of their nesting boxes, and hugs from her grandson, Austin.

One of her passions was being outside in the yard or in the courtyard or her flower garden -with a coffee cup in one hand and a spade in the other. Always making life more beautiful. Another passion, friends. Especially, friends with dogs. And of course, N. Reeve neighbors who became cherished friends. She and Frank joined Dataw’s Island Friends and had so much fun swapping stories, sharing food & drink, especially when hosting their annual holiday party, which celebrated the beauty of Frank’s meticulously, decorated Christmas tree!

Barbara loved unconditionally and was loved by many. Her loss leaves a tremendous hole in the lives of those left behind. Barb, Mom, we will miss you every day but, we will see you soon, dear sweet one.

Barbara is now in heaven with her God, her beloved parents and the exceptional golden retriever, Teddie.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; her children, Karen Diller, Jonathan (April) Diller and dear grandson, Austin Diller, all of SC. Barbara is also survived by her bonus children and their families, Marc (Corinne) Seguin, Michele (Kevin) McGarvey, Elise (Steve) Archual and Chris (Julie) Seguin. Barbara’s sister, Ruth P. Johns, nieces, Judy (Pete) Burkhardt, Kathy O’Leary and Marilyn (Dale) Chormanski are her surviving family in New York and Ohio. Barbara’s dear friend, Eileen Baker, has been a great source of comfort these past few years. Our love and gratitude.

Barbara would not want flowers but, donations to the Franciscan Center, 85 Mattis Drive, St. Helena, SC, the Palmetto Animal League, 56 Riverwalk Blvd., Ridgeland, SC or your local No-Kill Animal Shelter, would be appreciated.

She would want us to always remember what is important in life. Family and friends and to be kind to each other.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 o’clock on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, 70 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort, SC 29907, Father Paul MacNeil officiating. Following the service, the inurnment will be held at the Church’s columbarium.
