Peggy Jackson, 80, of Beaufort, South Carolina, and wife of Henry Jackson, passed away on January 1, 2019.
She was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on August 30, 1938, to the late George and Clara Jordan Nelson. Peggy had an idyllic childhood growing up on Folly Beach, and graduated from the High School of Charleston. She finished Winthrop College in 1960 and later received her MA from USC. After college, she moved to Beaufort to begin her teaching career where she met her beloved Henry. They were married in 1961, and he filled her life daily with joy and laughter.
Peggy was passionate about teaching, and the kindergarten classroom was where she spent most of her 33-year career. Her students adored her and learned much more than letters and numbers under her care. She was deeply respected by her students, their parents, her colleagues and her supervisors, and received several awards, including Teacher of the Year, due to her commitment to excellence. She was a long-time member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary teachers sorority, and held many offices on both the local and state level.
As much as Peggy loved teaching children, her first commitment was to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was active at The Baptist Church of Beaufort, serving in multiple capacities there, including deacon, and was a dedicated teacher to a ladies class for many years. In 2014 she became a Stephen Minister and continued to serve others even as her health declined. Peggy was a true friend and cared deeply for all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, George Nelson; and her son, Bryan Jackson.
She is survived by her husband Henry, grandson Garret, and Garret's mother Theresa, all of Beaufort.
A celebration of Peggy's life will be held at The Baptist Church of Beaufort, 601 Charles Street, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Baptist Church of Beaufort Endowment Fund, PO Box 879, Beaufort, SC 29901.
