Colonel Harmon S. Morgan Jr., United States Marine Corps (Ret.), 78, husband of Patricia Ellen Morgan, died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at MUSC-Charleston.
Harmon was born October 15, 1936 in Atlanta, GA. He was the only child of the late Harmon S. and Jewell H. Morgan. At age 17, Morgan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, beginning an active duty career which extended from 1954 until 1991 when he retired as a Colonel (06). He served with Marine and Joint Service organizations in the U.S., Southeast Asia, and the Middle East and aboard aircraft carriers deployed overseas. Morgan was a designated fighter/attack pilot who also served as an aerial gunnery and carrier landing instructor, foreign military advisor and battle staff commander aboard nuclear command/execution aircraft. His numerous awards included Defense Superior Service Medal; Defense Meritorious Service Medal, a Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medals (20), and a Purple Heart. After military retirement, the Morgan's settled as permanent residents of Fripp Island, where Harmon served as a Volunteer Firefighter from 1993 until 2012.
Morgan is survived by his wife of 42 years and a daughter Melinda and her husband David Sabo of Columbus, GA.
