Diane Marie Koellman, 76, of Fripp Island, South Carolina, died of pulmonary fibrosis at Candler Hospital in Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, January 27, 2018.
Diane was born in Highland Park Michigan on September 20, 1941 to George and Stephanie Smolarek. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Florian Parish in Hamtramck MI. She graduated from Hamtramck High School and worked at Wayne State University in Detroit. At the height of the Flower Child movement in California she moved to San Francisco and went to work for Bechtel Corp as a data entry supervisor. After moving to the nuclear power division, she met her husband Carl and settled down in Galt California, spent several years in Maryland, and moved to Jonesboro GA to be near family and raise her daughter Quinn. While in Jonesboro she managed a county library and supervised the kitchens at several county schools. On retirement she moved to Fripp Island SC.
She traveled overseas on concert tours with her husband Carl who sang with the Southern Crescent Chorale. She visited Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, France, Scotland, Ireland, and England, in addition to Canada, Alaska and Mexico.
She loved to cook and garden, always finding ways to deny Fripp Island deer their next salad brunch.
Diane is survived by her mother, Stephanie Smolarek; husband, Carl Koellman; daughter, Quinn Trahan (husband David); grandson, Matthew Trahan; brother, Gerald Smolarek (wife Gerry); sister, Judith Mercurio; niece, Shannon Haag, and nephew, Lawrence Smolarek.
There will be a funeral mass Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 3 o'clock at Holy Cross Mission on St. Helena Island, and interment at the Fripp Island Columbarium. A reception will follow at the Fripp Island Community Centre.
We know she is in heaven and will be close to us always, waiting to join her in bliss forever.
