Doris M. Gregory

d. October 8, 2014

Doris Gregory passed away peacefully April 7, 2015, at her daughter's home in Goffstown, NH.  Born on August 18, 1928, in West Paterson, New Jersey, the daughter of Walker and Violet Mathias, Doris enjoyed ice skating on Barber's Pond, roller skating with her girlfriends, block dances and many fun trips to New York City with her best friend Mary (Osepovich) Johanns.  Doris met her future husband, Bob Gregory, on the bus to Passaic Valley High School.  Bob was three years older, but Doris led him to believe it was only two until her next birthday came around when she revealed her true age.

Upon graduation from PV, Doris began her career as a Legal Secretary at the age of 16 in downtown Paterson.  She continued working for various law offices until her retirement in 1991 from the office of Maraziti, Falcon and Gregory in Boonton.  Doris was able to juggle her career and family life, raising three children, Bob, Jim and Laura, who often were unaware their mother worked outside of the home.  Doris enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing, and always had a hot meal, including dessert, ready regardless of her husband's shift schedule.

Doris and Bob never shied away from a challenge or a new experience.  They wall papered many a room together, had an in-ground pool installed in 1960, finished a basement, and drove cross country towing a pop-up camper twice with 2 kids and a dog.  Later on, they took up cross-country skiing and traveled to Germany and Vermont several times with friends to enjoy the slopes.

In 1971, Doris and Bob built their dream home in Montville, NJ, from a design cut out from a newspaper many years prior.  After 20 years there, they decided to build their retirement home in Beaufort, South Carolina, based on a similar design.  They loved spending time at the beach and on the golf course and were just getting settled into their new home when Bob passed away from a heart attack after 43 years of a loving marriage.

Doris stayed in Beaufort, making new friends, joining the 9-Holers, sewing, reading and spending lots of time at the beach.  She and her longtime friend, Carl Rehberg, enjoyed visiting and traveling together.  Upon being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010, Doris came to live with her daughter, Laura, and her family.

Doris is survived by her three children and their spouses, Bob and Libby Gregory, Jim and Angie Gregory, and Laura and Richard Barrett, eight Grandchildren: April, Bob, Jim, Larissa, Adam, Matt, Sarah and Lydia; and five Great Grandchildren: Aaron, Elliot, James, A'Dair, and Jonathan.  Doris is also survived by her sister, Joan, 2 nieces and 2 nephews.  Doris will be dearly missed by all, but especially the family dog, Skippy.

The funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 11, 2015, at the graveside, Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doris' name to the Alzheimer's Association at www.ALZ.org .

A celebration of Doris' life will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
