BEAUFORT - Dorothea Burkhart Allyn passed away Thursday, February 6, 2014 at her residence. She is survived by four children, Ann Burkhart Squires of Beaufort, SC, Sally Burkhart-Haddad of Oakton, VA and Columbia, SC, Jacque Burkhart Spataro of Malone, NY and Bonita Springs, FL, John A. Burkhart, Jr of Acworth, GA and Orlando, FL. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Allyn graduated from Randolf Macon Women's College with a degree in Music and English. She obtained her Masters of Education from the State University of New York. She worked on her PHD in Philosophy at New York University in Manhattan, at the Sorbonne in Paris and in Kyoto, Japan. She travelled extensively Western and Eastern Europe, China, the Middle East, Russia, South America and the United States.

She was the chair of the English and Foreign Language Departments in the Troy City School District in Troy, NY and occasionally taught at the University level. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas Heyward Chapter. In that position she was Chapter Regent and All State Music Director. She was also a member of the American Guild of Organists, Hausmusik and was the organist for All Faiths Chapel on Fripp Island for many years. She was also a member of the Audubon Club, The Women's Club, and The Friends of Music Club on Fripp Island.

A memorial service will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, February 22, 2014, in the chapel of Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive, Beaufort.
