PORT ROYAL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Dorothy Hand Chambers, 97, of Port Royal, South Carolina, widow of Colonel Owen A. Chambers, USMC, Ret., died Monday, September 26, 2011, at River Oaks Residential Care. Mrs. Chambers was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Lee Hand and the late Mary Withers Hand. She was educated in Charlotte city schools and Queens College. Mrs. Chambers was a member of St. Helena's Episcopal Church, where she was choir director from 1965 until 1976. She played the piano for services held at Bayview Manor. Mrs. Chambers was co-owner and operator of the Lowcountry Boutique on Carteret Street for many years.
She was pre deceased by a son, Owen Stirling Chambers in 1982.
Mrs. Chambers is survived by a son, William Elliott Chambers of Austin, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Jean Barnes; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Friday morning, September 30, 2011, at St. Helena's Episcopal Church with The Reverend Mark Avera officiating. Interment will be at 12 noon in Beaufort National Cemetery.
Following Mrs. Chambers service a reception will be held at St. Helena's Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested memorials be made to St. Helena's Parish.
