BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Dr. Charles Schley Aimar, Sr., of Beaufort, South Carolina passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012, at his home.  He was born in Savannah, Georgia on November 12, 1924, the son of Eugenie Vivian Toomer and William Washington Aimar.  He attended Clemson College, leaving to join the United States Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Fifth Marine Division.  He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the first wave of assault on Iwo Jima, was a China Marine, and served during the occupation of Japan.  After his honorable discharge from the service he completed his degree from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy.  In 1951, he returned to Beaufort to open Aimar's Pharmacy where he continued to practice until 2008.





He was a member of many organizations, including the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, the South Carolina Coastal Council Board, the City Of Beaufort's Board of Architectural Review, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Jean Ribaut Society, the Sertoma Club, the Beaufort Rotary Club, and the South Carolina Historical Society and was an officer of the Thomas Heyward Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.  He was a co-founder of the Heritage Society of Beaufort, the Beaufort County Republican Party, and The Beaufort Academy, and a trustee of the Beaufort College and Beaufort Memorial Hospital.  He was a member of the Beaufort Volunteer Fire Department, and former President of the South Carolina Independent School Association and former member of Beaufort City Council.  He was twice president of the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce.  He was former president of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association.  He was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, serving as elder, deacon, and Sunday School teacher, and served as trustee for Stoney Creek Independent Presbyterian Chapel of Prince William Parish.  At the time of his death he was attending the Parish Church of St. Helena.  He cherished his family, friends, God, and country.





He is survived by his wife, Sarah Jeanne Sams; his brother, Toomer Vanderhorst Aimar and wife Jean; his brother-in-law Talbird Reeve Sams and wife Betty; sisters-in-law Therese Sams Colquhoun and Roberta Sjoblom Aimar; his children, Jeanne Aimar Rogers and husband John, Priscilla Aimar Trask, Pamela Aimar Kinsey, Amelie Aimar Cromer and husband Philip, and Charles Schley Aimar Jr. and wife Virginia; his grandchildren Elizabeth Allison Rogers, Jennifer Rogers Bergmann Tosky, Kimberly Dargan Rogers, Sarah Trask Burrus, William Davis Trask, Jr., Robert Taylor Kinsey, III, Charles Talbird Hunter Kinsey, Helen Fripp Cromer Langford, Frances Barnwell Vanderhorst Cromer,  Charles Schley Aimar, III, and Margaret Louise Lachicotte Aimar.  He is also survived by six great grandchildren: Coulter Bergmann, Isabel Bergmann, Ward Burrus, Patrick Burrus, Amelia Burrus, and Vivian Kinsey.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.





He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Barbara Aimar Goodwin, and his brothers, William Washington Aimar, III and Neal Vincent Aimar.





The Visitation will be from 3 until 6 o'clock Sunday, June 10, at the family home.





The service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday, June 11, at the Parish Church of St. Helena. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
