Dr. Charles 'Chuck' Olney died comfortably at his home in Dataw Island, SC on Monday, November 26, 2018.
Chuck was born in Amsterdam, NY on April 20, 1943 to the late William and Bertha Olney. He earned his B.A. from Hamilton College, M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, and M.D. from Hahnemann Medical College. He performed his surgical training at Boston City Hospital, served his country as a surgeon at Grand Forks Air Force base in North Dakota, and practiced both general and vascular surgery at the Anna-Jaques hospital in Newburyport, the Hale Hospital in Haverhill and the Amesbury Hospital for over 25 years.
Chuck was an avid basketball and squash player, and some of his fondest memories were skiing in Colorado and playing golf in Europe with his family. He was known for his great mind, quick wit, and irreverent sense of humor; but behind the humor, he was also known for healing countless sick patients, quietly helping people in need, and deeply loving his friends and children. He fundraised for Anna-Jaques Hospital at the annual golf outing, served on the Newburyport Rotary Club, operated the Artichoke Christmas Tree Farm, and coached youth sports. Chuck was a force of life in every community he was a part of ' known and loved quickly by all - and he will be missed dearly.
Chuck is survived by his long-term partner, Janet Beaudoin, two brothers, Larry and Bill Olney, two children, Chuck Olney and Betsy Goldfarb, and their mother, Donna Cohen. He thoroughly enjoyed his three grandchildren, Jack and Lizzy Olney, and Ellie Goldfarb.
Dr. Olney's celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 30 from 5:30-7:30pm upstairs at the Port Tavern (84 State Street, Newburyport, MA). Stories will begin at 6:30pm. A celebration in Dataw Island, SC will happen at a later date.
