LADY'S ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - Elaine Belisle Rathbun passed away on October 17, 2011, in Charleston, South Carolina. Elaine was born in West Springfield, MA., on March 23, 1917. She received her nursing degree during World War II and went to Hawaii to nurse where she met her future husband of 49 years, Col. James Potter Rathbun, Sr. They retired to Brickyard Point Farms on Lady's Island in 1968. Elaine loved playing bridge, reading, golf tournaments, and crossword puzzles, even the New York Times Sunday puzzles. For many years she volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of St. Peter's Parish for the past 40 plus years. Surviving are three children Walter Rathbun and wife Carole, James P. Rathbun Jr. and wife Nancy, and Mary Belisle Rathbun and husband John Lennon; two grandchildren, Lauren Shaddrix and husband Brian and James P. Rathbun III and wife Monica; four great grandchildren, Brison and Adeline Shaddrix, and Molly and Allison Rathbun. A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 21, at St. Peter's Catholic Church. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions would be greatly appreciated if directed to the Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, South Carolina or The Prayer Quilt Ministry, John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway, Charleston, South Carolina.
