BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Frances Bowman Cobb, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died Thursday, September 12, 2013. She was the wife and widow of MG William W. Cobb (USA-Ret), beloved mother of Betsy Cobb-Seliga and William W. Cobb, Jr., grandmother of three, and great-grandmother of two.
She was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Memphis, TN, the daughter of Rubye and Russell Bowman. She wed the love of her life on her birthday in 1946 and was married for the next 60 years. After a honeymoon in Acapulco, they embarked on a life in the military. For the next 30 years, they served in more than a dozen duty stations, were separated by two wars and various temporary duty assignments, and raised two children. As a young officer's wife she developed relationships with families on Army posts around the world and in civilian life that would last for the rest of her life. Retiring to Beaufort in 1975, Fran and Bill devoted the next several decades to serving the community. She was active as a docent at the John Mark Verdier House and at St. Helena Episcopal Church. She was also an avid tennis player and loved the game of golf. Just as Beaufort embraced Fran and Bill in retirement, they in turn embraced the Low-Country.
A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, Sep. 16th, at 12:30pm at The Parish Church of St. Helena, with burial at the Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00pm, followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice.
