Grace Foster Dennis passed away on May 24, 2023, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Born in Westminister, SC, on July 16, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William Harrell and Grace Bowles Foster. Grace was a graduate of Westminster High School and Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, and had a Masters in Secondary Education from Pepperdine. She moved to Beaufort in 1957 to teach in Beaufort County as they offered higher salaries, and it's where she met her husband Pat. They were married in 1960.
Grace taught for Beaufort County for ten years and had the honor of having Pat Conroy in her homeroom at Beaufort High. She taught two years at Beaufort Academy, and twenty-one years at the Technical College of the Low Country. She also taught adult education and served on numerous Beaufort boards to include the Disabilities and Special Needs Board and was an Emeritus Member of the Technical College of the Low Country Foundation.
Grace and Pat were faithful members of St. Peter's Catholic Church and members of a monthly supper club for 50 years. She was also in a bi-weekly bridge club for more than fifty years and of an investment club, Ladies Unlimited, for 28 years. After retirement from education, Grace spent many joyful hours volunteering at St. Peter's Catholic Church and was awarded The Catholic Woman of the Year.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Patrick (Pat) Dennis, and her brother William Harrell (Sonny) Foster (Gambrell). She is survived by her three children: John Patrick (Jay) Dennis (Rebecca), Scott Foster Dennis (Lyn), and Grace Elizabeth (Beth) Dennis, all of Beaufort. Her life was enriched beyond measure by her five grandchildren: Catherine Young Dennis and Caroline Dennis Angell (Chad), both of Denver, CO; John Patrick Dennis, III, (Brandy) of Beaufort, Katelyn Grace Dennis of Charleston, and Robert Scott Dennis (Kelsey) of Beaufort. She was delighted by the birth of her great grandson, John Patrick Dennis IV (Jack) in August 2022.
The family will receive visitors in the church yard at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 30, followed by the funeral service in the church at 11:30. A reception will follow immediately after at the church social hall, the Walsh Palmetto Room.
