ST. HELENA ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - Guy R. Hollister, 89, husband of Jean B. Hollister, passed away on July 30, 2012, surrounded by his family at the NHC facility in Okatie, SC. He was born to the late Col. Ralph E. Hollister and the late Marguerite Alepee Hollister in Jackson, MS on September 1, 1922.
After attending Millsaps College, he enlisted in the Army Air Force where he served as a code officer in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Upon his return, he attended Capital Radio Electronics Institute for training in electronics engineering and began his government career at the Foreign Broadcast Information Service. He served at FBIS for 35 years, retiring in 1979 as the Chief Engineer. During his career, he and his family traveled around the world, including stations in Cyprus, Nigeria, and Okinawa.
After his retirement, he moved to Dataw Island where he loved to golf and fish. This year, the Dataw Island Golf Association named him as the first recipient of the DIGA Honors Tournament. An active member of the community, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and many other organizations and was a faithful member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He was an enthusiastic, if unlucky, participant in the weekly football pool.
His family was always his first priority, and he took great pride in their achievements. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean, his daughters Lisa Begley (Tim) of Alexandria, VA, and Terry Meyer (Kyle) of Berryville, VA, and his four granddaughters Kelsey and Delaney Begley and Emma and Ellie Meyer. He was preceded in death by his son John Patrick.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to the Franciscan Center, PO Box 682, St. Helena Island, SC, 29920, or St. Peter's Catholic Church, 70 Lady's Island Drive, Beaufort, SC, 29907.
