Henry Carroll Chambers, age 89, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

He was born on July 23, 1928, on Port Republic Street in Beaufort, S.C. He is the son of Virginia Pollitzer Mitchell and Carroll Jones Chambers. He was predeceased by his wives, Elizabeth Brewer Chambers and Joye Jenkins Chambers, and sons Henry Carroll Chambers Jr. and Joseph Brewer Chambers.

He is survived by his children: Judy Chambers Trask (Web), Roscoe William Chambers (Connie), Carroll Chambers Easterling (John), and grandchildren: Dargan Trask Tunstall (John), Carroll Trask Eckel (Brian), Mabel Trask Kitchin (Hal), Shae Chambers Helms (Jason), Carroll Anne Chambers, Laura Pinckney Chambers, Lee Easterling Shirley (Will), John Lawrence Easterling IV, Henry Chambers Easterling, and 12 great-grandchildren.

He graduated from Beaufort High School, where he was member of the state championship basketball and football teams. He earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. He continued throughout his life to serve the Boy Scouts of America earning the awards of Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope.

Henry graduated from Clemson University in 1949 with a degree in Civil Engineering. For his continuous service on several boards and love of Clemson, he was honored with the Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor an alumnus can receive.

He served in the United States Army and then returned to Beaufort. He owned Burton Block and Concrete Company and Beaufort Realty Company.

He was actively involved with Rotary, Sertoma, and Harmony Masonic Lodge #22. He served as mayor of Beaufort for over 20 years. Henry was instrumental in defining a vision for a waterfront park and turning that vision into reality. That park is now named in his honor.

Henry received the Order of the Palmetto, which is considered the highest civilian honor in the state of South Carolina. He was awarded this honor on his 89th birthday during the 62nd Beaufort Water Festival.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, July 23rd, 2018, at 4:30 pm at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park.
