James Joseph Doherty passed away unexpectedly at home with his wife by his side in Beaufort, SC on Saturday morning June 10, 2017. Jim was born in Nyack, NY to the late Charles F. and Lucille (Ahrens) Doherty on March 26, 1939.
He was the only son among three sisters. He spent his early years in the Liberty, NY area. He was a graduate of Georgetown University where he received a business degree. He met his wife Karen Price through his sister Kathleen and they were married a year later and have spent fifty wonderful years together.
Karen and Jim lived in Shrub Oak, NY for 25 years, spent two wonderful years in Tokyo and retired to Beaufort, SC in 1997. Jim was a member of St Peter's Catholic Church.
Jim spent 33 years working for IBM in different management jobs. He started in the mail room while still in college and was manager of Executive Events when he retired. He then started a consulting firm and continued to consult mainly for IBM for several more years. Toward the end of his career he oversaw IBM sponsored events at several Olympic Games, including Lillehammer and Nagano.
Jim loved history and took advantage of all the history classes and trips provided by OLLI at the University of SC. He took the Clemson Leadership class and highly recommended it to all his friends. Jim loved to travel and he and Karen travelled extensively. He was a voracious reader, a model train buff and collected stamps and coins. He was known for his dry sense of humor.
Besides Karen, he is survived by his son Jim and his wife Amy (Greene) of Arlington, VA, daughter Colleen Balkan and her husband B??rk of Madison, CT, son Sean of Austin, TX, his three beautiful granddaughters that he adored, Zoe Balkan, Gillian and Tallula Doherty, his sisters Maureen Loughney of Silver Spring, MD, Kathleen (Peter) Gross of Crofton, MD and Eileen of Annandale, VA and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at St Peter's Church on Lady's Island at 9:30a.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017.
