James Maxwell McCornock - Jim, or Sandy as he was known by family, passed away at his home on Dataw Island on January 18, 2017 with his loved ones by his side. Jim was born December 17, 1938 in Long Beach, CA to Cdr S A McCornock and Jeane Laing McCornock. He lived many placed during his dad's military career but the family home was Iron River, MI where lots of relatives helped make many wonderful childhood memories. Following graduation from Purdue University in 1961 with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering Jim received his commission in the United States Navy and set out on an eight year adventure serving his Country. He first served on the destroyer Willis A Lee followed by a series of schools in preparation for duty aboard the USS Permit, a fast attack nuclear submarine. He was often heard to say that the Cold War duties on that sub provided the most exciting challenges of his life. After leaving the Navy, Jim earned an MBA at the University of Michigan. His civilian career began in Toledo, OH with Owens-Illinois, where he held various financial management positions culminating with him being named Vice-President, Plastics and Closure Group. He took early retirement from O-I and went on to be the CFO of Toledo Molding & Die, an automotive parts manufacturer. After moving to Dataw 18 years ago, Jim leant his skills to many volunteer activities including the Dataw Island Club, the Dataw Island Tennis Association, United Way of the Lowcountry and Camp St Mary's School for unwed mothers. His lifelong love of tennis found home on the courts a lot in retirement and he was very proud to have been a team member on the National Champions "Dataw dAWGS" in 2005. He held life memberships in the Purdue Alumni Association and the Alpha Sigma Phi National Fraternity. Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth (Beth), a daughter Kathleen of Hillsboro, OR; a son James of Lutz, FL; and a brother M Duncan (Helen) of Indio, CA; Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews brought him much joy over the years. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Bonnie Malmquist. Inurnment will be private at the Beaufort National Cemetery. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at the Dataw Island Club on April 7, 2017 from 3:00 until; 5:00 p.m. Remembrances may be directed to the United Way of the Lowcountry or Friends of Caroline Hospice. A kind, caring and generous man - he will be missed by many.
