James 'Jim' Raymond Pope Sr., 74, of Beaufort, husband of Sharon Brooks Pope, went home to the Lord on Friday, June 26, 2020.
Jim was born on October 18, 1945 in Cartersville, GA to the late Rose Marguerite Moody and Raymond Earnest Pope. He was a member of the Class of 1963 'Go Tidal Wave' and went to Americus Georgia Technical College. Following College Jim enlisted into the United States Army. After Jim left the Army he was employed at the Beaufort Post Office and retired after 30 years of service. Later Jim became courier for Sun Trust Bank and worked part time with Olin Brown Taxi and Beaufort Cab.
Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, a daughter Marie Smith (Gary) of Beaufort; a son Ray Pope of Beaufort; a grand-daughter Brittany Smith; two grandsons, Joshua Dunham and Thomas Smith both of Beaufort; three step-sisters, Joyce Hibbs (Bucky) of Florida, Carol Ann Miller (George) and Margie Walters (Robert) all of Beaufort.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Ed Ownby Sr., and stepbrother Eddie Ownby Jr.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 1st from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Copeland Funeral Service.
A funeral service for Jim will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 2nd at The Baptist Church of Beaufort. Burial will follow at 12:00 noon at Beaufort National Cemetery with United States Army Honors.
Memorials may be made in Jims name to The Baptist Church of Beaufort building fund, the Alzheimer's Association or to the Diabetes Association.
