James Russell Tibboles (89) of Beaufort, SC (formerly of Sandusky, Ohio) passed away on Sunday, September 25th, following a brief illness.
Jim was born in Bellevue, Ohio to Melvin & Martha (Schaefer) Tibboles. Upon his graduation from Belleveue High School, Jim joined the U.S. Navy in 1952. He was first stationed in Pensacola, Florida and was then sent to the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Boxer CVA21. Upon discharge, Jim worked for the U.S. Postal Service where he was a letter carrier for 33 years.
Jim was a long time member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sandusky where he married Janice (Sandersen) Tibboles, his wife of 50 years. Together they had two children: Julie (Paul) Tillman of Folly Beach, SC and Jill (Henry) Merchant of Beaufort, SC. He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice, and his sister, Jeanette Sage. He is survived by his two children, two grandchildren (Megan Merchant & Hannah Merchant), brother (Bill Tibboles) and sister (Victoria Clevenger).
Jim was an avid waterskier and once skied non-stop across Lake Erie from Lakeside, Ohio to Kingsville, Canada. He was one of the founding members of the Flatwater Ski Club where he also did the groundskeeping for over 20 years. Another passion of Jim's was drag racing. He built and drove dragsters, primarily at Norwalk Raceway and Dragway 42. He also enjoyed basketball and surfing. Jim was a member of the Sandusky Elks Lodge and volunteered for many years building homes for Habitat for Humanity, earning the Golden Hammer award.
A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, 9/28 at 4:30 pm at St. John's Lutheran Church in Beaufort, SC. A celebration of life will be held in Sandusky, Ohio on Saturday, October 22nd from 5-7 pm at Chet & Matt's Pizza.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sandusky, Ohio or Habitat for Humanity.
