Joanne Lewis Schaekel

d. November 9, 2021

Ms. Joanne 'Cookie' Cecelia Lewis Schaekel, 74, of Chapin, South Carolina passed away on November 6, 2021.

She was born February 1, 1947, in Quantico, VA, the second of four children born to Raymond Eugene and Josephine Lewis. A Beaufort High School graduate, she went on to receive her Bachelor of Science from East Carolina University. She returned home to begin her career. She married William Schaekel, December 2nd, 1972; they moved to Columbia, SC and had 2 children. She received her Masters of Social Work from the University of South Carolina and served the families and children of South Carolina for 34 years as a child protective service program coordinator with the Department of Social Services. She was passionate about safeguarding the lives of women and children.

Cookie loved reading, family genealogy research, birdwatching, and traveling with her family. She enjoyed concerts, the beach, shopping for hats, and watching her granddaughter ride horses. She never knew a stranger and loved to discuss history, science, and the Marine Corps. All of these passions were only surpassed by the love of her children and, in particular, her only granddaughter, as she played an instrumental part in her upbringing.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her older brother, Raymond Lewis Jr.

Survivors include her children; John Schaekel of Chapin, SC, and Amanda Schaekel & granddaughter, Ava, of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; her siblings, Ralph Lewis and Suzanne Kirkland, and their families.

The Schaekel family will hold a funeral service at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, November 15, 2021, in the chapel of Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive, Beaufort.
