John Ray Quattlebaum, 71, of Bluffton, SC
John Quattlebaum passed away at 1:24 a.m., on June 19, 2017. He was born in Columbia, SC, on May 25, 1946. He graduated high school from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn., where he lettered in track and football. He attended the University of South Carolina where he was the commander of the Air Force ROTC Drill Team. John graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in accounting and was the Distinguished Military Graduate. He received a commission as an Air Force Officer and served as an F-111 Weapons Systems Officer in the Vietnam War.
John spent his career as a software project manager for Unisys, Corp., Progress Software and Siquent. He later became a certified financial planner with Wells Fargo Advisors and Edward Jones.
John was most proud of his military service. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and worked to raise funds for veterans and to educate younger generations about the Vietnam War. He was also a certified tennis instructor and volunteered his time teaching children and senior adults.
John is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Martin Hyde; his stepchildren LeGrand Putnam Hyde IV and Courtney Hyde McDermott; four step grandchildren, Alexandra and Kaylee Hyde, and Morgan and Brennan McDermott; his mother, Ruth Quattlebaum; sisters Jeanne Byrd and Mary Murray; brother Bill Quattlebaum; and, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Ray Quattlebaum and his brother, Allen Quattlebaum.
A graveside service for John will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC, with Air Force honors.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
