BEAUFORT - Joseph Carroll Perkins, 76, of Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away in the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, South Carolina, on March 11, 2014.
He was born on December 7, 1937, in Mission, Texas, to the late Jesse Brooks Perkins and Erma Gosch Perkins.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Priscilla Sandel Perkins, are his children, Susan Peterson, Leslie Lampy, Joseph Perkins, Jr., Shawn Perkins, Carol Krepps, Brooks Perkins and Juanita Perkins.
Surviving also are his brothers Thomas Perkins, and Charles Perkins, sister Gloria White, twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
After graduating from La Joya High School in Mission, Texas, Joe entered the United States Marine Corps and served for nine years. He received an Honorable Discharge for his active service in the Weapons Training Brigade at Parris Island, South Carolina. His awards include Good Conduct Medal (3rd award), and Rifle Expert and Pistol Sharpshooter Badges.
He was employed by New York Life Insurance Company, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Atlantic Coast Life, and World Finance Corporation.
Joe served as both Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort where he also served as the organizer and president of Prime Timers. He was a volunteer at HELP of Beaufort, past Commander, American Legion Post 9, and past president of Pleasant Farm Neighborhood Homeowners Association.
An interment service will be held at 1 o'clock on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the Beaufort National Cemetery Pavilion.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church in Beaufort, followed by a reception at the Fellowship Hall.
