ATHEN, GEORGIA - Lillian (Lil) Gamble Berry, of Athens, Georgia and widow of Colonel James P. Berry, U. S. Air Force (Ret.), died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at her residence.





Born on June 11, 1922 in Kingstree, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Virginia Mimms Gamble and the late Frank Gamble. She attended Kingstree schools and graduated from Kingstree High School, Class of 1939. Mrs. Berry was a graduate of the Tri-County Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1944, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She served as an Army nurse during World War II and her story has been included in the Veteran's History Project in the Library of Congress. She was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and was stationed at Moore General Hospital in Swannanoa, North Carolina.





She was a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church in Black Mountain, North Carolina and a current member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia. She was a proud breast cancer survivor and a shining example of optimism who will be forever missed.





In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, James Richard Berry of Marietta, Georgia.





Surviving are her daughter, Sandy Berry of Athens, Georgia; her partner, Joan Prittie of Athens, Georgia; her sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Marvin Livingston of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and several nieces and nephews.





The family will receive friends from 12 until 12:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive.





The funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon at the graveside, Beaufort National Cemetery.
