Lois Burley Horn

d. May 18, 2011

BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Lois B. Horn, 84, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died Saturday morning, September 22, 2012, at her home surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and dog Gretchen.

Lois and her late husband Al moved to Beaufort in 1993 from Syracuse, NY. Her life-long passion for over 60 years was piano performance and instruction and she still had students at the time of her death.  She received a Bachelor in Music from Syracuse University and a Masters from Michigan State University.  Lois continued her concert piano education through private studies with Eugene List and Leon Fleisher.

Not only a teacher of gifted students, she was an early practitioner in the 1970s of music therapy for special needs children.  Lois served as a judge for numerous piano competitions throughout the country and was an active officer and member of many professional music organizations.  In 1984, she was awarded a permanent master teacher's certificate by the Music Teachers National Association.  She was a founding member of the Beaufort Area Music Teachers and Haus Musik, an organization dedicated to promoting local musical talent.

Lois also became an active volunteer in Beaufort, bringing music and her miniature schnauzer Heidi to nursing homes.  She frequently mused that Heidi was more popular than her piano playing with the patients.  She was also a Friends of Caroline Hospice volunteer for many years.  In her final years, Lois herself became the grateful recipient of their services, allowing her to live out her life independently and with dignity.  She was a loving mother and grandmother, interested in life and learning to the end.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Allen F. Horn, Jr.

She is survived by her three children, Allen F. Horn III (wife: Susan), Lawrence A. Horn (wife: Christine) and Elisabeth (Lisa) West (husband: Mark) and seven grandchildren; Allen Horn IV, Bethany, Whitney and Nathan Horn, Brian, Michael and Audrey West.  She is also survived by her sisters, Beverly Killion and Margyl Buckel and their families in California.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Monday evening, September 24, 2012, at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive.

The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, September 25, 2012, at Sea Island Presbyterian Church with a reception following the service.
