Louis Walpole Pinckney, Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on July 14, 2023, at the age of 90. He was born on October 20, 1932, to James Porcher Pinckney, Jr. and Katherine Walpole Pinckney. He was a native of Beaufort and the youngest of 8 children. Louis was a descendant from the Pinckney family that came from Bishop Auckland, England and settled in the Lowcountry in 1692.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years and mother of his children, Helen Kasper Pinckney, as well as 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Louis and Helen met in Taylor, Texas while Louis was serving in the United States Air Force. During his time in the military, he served as a mechanic and enjoyed playing football for the Red Devils while being stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After completing 11 years of service, Louis and Helen returned to Beaufort in 1965, where they purchased and operated Fender’s Grocery on Joe Fraizer Road; during which time, Louis would spend weekends working in construction. Upon the sale of the store in 1969, Louis embarked on a career in homebuilding, and soon thereafter founded Quality Builders. During that time, over the span of more than 30 years, Louis built over 300 homes throughout many communities in the Lowcountry. While he was involved in many projects, one of his most meaningful was building homes on the property where he was born and raised, known today as Habersham.
He is survived by his son, Louis Walpole Pinckney, Jr. and his wife, Deborah Walsh Pinckney; his daughters, Alicia Pinckney Story, and her husband Robert E. Story; Anna Pinckney Graham and her husband David A. Graham; One sister, Sarah Pinckney Davis; two grandsons, Emery Grant Story and his wife Hannah J. Story and Jacob Cotesworth Pinckney and his wife Kathleen D. Pinckney; and one great grandchild Robert James Pinckney Story.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Copeland Funeral Service.
A graveside service for Louis will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Beaufort National Cemetery with United States Air Force honors.
At the conclusion of the service the family invites all attendees to join them at the Pinckney residence.
