BEAUFORT - LtCol Darrell Max Smith, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), 86, of Beaufort, South Carolina and husband of Shirley June Smith, died Friday, June 13, 2014, at his residence. Colonel Smith was born, in Tipton, Indiana, January 3, 1928, to Vern and Edna Smith. After graduating from Tipton High School, he joined the Army and was sent to Japan.  This was at the end of WW II. Upon his return to the United States, he met Shirley June Krebs while working in his family's grocery store.  One year later they were married, that was 66 years ago.  They opened their own grocery and meat market in Atlanta, Indiana.  Two years later he received an "invitation" to report, in 30 days to Parris Island, South Carolina for boot camp. He was an enlisted Marine for 12 years, before being selected to attend Officers' Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia.  As well as being a World War II veteran, he served during the Korean War and service 2 tours in Vietnam.  His entire military service was 32 years. The Colonel is survived by his wife; Shirley June Krebs Smith, a son; Darrell Alan Smith and his wife Cathy of Denmark, South Carolina, a daughter; Janelle M. Tripp and her husband, Doug of Lennox, South Dakota, five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister; Rosalyce Grubbs of Fort Wayne, Indiana, three brothers; Jim Smith of Greencastle, Indiana, Dick Smith of Fort Meyers, Florida, and Keith Smith of Rochester, New York. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Monday, June 16, 2014, at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at The Baptist Church of Beaufort. Burial, with full Marine Corps honors, will follow in the church cemetery.
