FRIPP ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - On September 15, 2011, Mr. Luther W. Cashdollar of Fripp Island passed away in his sleep. He had been under the care of Hospice Care of the Low Country and was with family members when he died.
Mr. Cashdollar was born in Turtle Creek, PA., of August 9, 1913, to Jessie Scholick and William Cashdollar. He attended the University if Pittsburg and Carnegie Mellon where he studied chemistry and metallurgy. In the 1930's Mr. Cashdollar worked in the steel industry for Union Electric Steel Corporation in Carnegie PA., as a chemist. During World War II he was sent to Tulsa, OK at the request of the U.S. Army Ordinance to be supervisor of the U.S. Defense plant making cannons. In 1948, he returned to Union Electric Steep Corporation as chief metallurgical engineer. From 1953- 1959, Mr. Cashdollar was Vice-president of Sales and a metallurgical engineer for Pittsburg Metallurgical Company. Mr. Cashdollar later returned to Union Electric Steel where he was on the Board of Directors from 1967 until 1984 rising from Vice-President of Sales, to Executive Vice-President, to Chairman of the Board. Mr. Cashdollar retired with his wife Rita, to Fripp Island, SC, in 1977 where, except for a few years in Titusville, FL, he lived until he died. Mr. Cashdollar was active with the F.I. Public Service District, the volunteer fire department, and was instrumental in the building of the Fripp Island Community Centre and All Faiths Chapel. He was predeceased in death by his wife of over 60 years Rita Margaret Kohler Cashdollar of Pittsburg, PA. and Fripp Island; his son-in-laws George Thumlert of Dallas TX and William Edmunds of Harrisburg PA.
Mr. Cashdollar is survived by daughters Arlene Edmunds of Harrisburg, PA., Vickey Thumlert of Dallas, TX, and Leslie Cashdollar of Dallas TX. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Karen Edmunds and her family Victoria and Christian Faale of Beaufort SC; Adrienne Edmunds-Weil and her family Michael Slater, and Hannah Weil of Crested Butte, CO.; Carol Thumlert and Dori Thumlert of Dallas TX.; Jason Thumlert and Kristin Thumlert of Austin TX; and Lauren Johnson of Washington, DC.
