BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Major Eric L. Montgomery, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), 61, of Beaufort, South Carolina, proud Dad and loving "Pop" passed away Sunday, September 15, 2103, at his residence.

Eric grew up in a military family, spending the majority of his youth in Virginia. He had a adventurous spirit, loved traveling and seeing new places and enjoyed being outdoors. His love of flying was inherited from his father and shared with his brother, Craig.

He was proud to have served his country for 20 years as a Marine, primarily as a naval Flight Officer in the F4 Phantom fighter jet. He was always quick with a story of the G's he had pulled or the MIGs he had "fought."

Eric loved music grew up playing the drums. He was a member of the marching band in high school and was the drummer for several bands including the hit garage band, "The Other Half." He graduated from Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach, VA. Eric marched in the first Earth Day parade and played soccer for Virginia Wesleyan College, where he received a Bachelor's degree in chemistry. He was self-taught in computers and electronics and was on his second career being employed by the State as a programmer with Beaufort County Board of Elections and Registration. Eric was a history aficionado and enjoyed building model cars.

Eric had an unusual sense of humor that always brought a chuckle. He was never short on advice and was always quick to share his opinion, solicited or not. Eric was dearly loved by his family, admired by his grandsons, and respected by those who knew him as a hard-worker who wanted things done right.

Eric is survived by his wife, Carol Palmer Montgomery; two daughters Amy Moral and her husband, Gilbert, and Ellen Haynes and a "son" Lowell Haynes; four grandsons, Carson, Jared, Parker, and Braden Haynes; his mother and step-father, Ruth and Fred McFarland; three sisters, Kaye Reed, Kim Walker (Gary) and Marcia Gesner; and seven nieces and nephews.
