Major Michael 'Iron Mike' Mastroberti, USMC, retired, 91, died at his home on July 31st. Mike is preceded in death by his wife Jean and their daughter Carol Mastroberti-Mayo.
Surviving is his daughter, Susan Dodd; son Gary Mastroberti and wife, Ann; son-in-law David Mayo; and his grandchildren; Catherine and Amanda Dodd, Ella Mastroberti, and Hunter Mayo.
Mike enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1951. He served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The majority of Mike's career with the Marines was in aircraft maintenance. He was in charge of many different aircraft including the only F7U-3 Cutlass in Marine Corps History. Upon his retirement on January 1, 1978 he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Mike came up through the enlisted ranks and retired as a Major. Mike was heavily involved with the Marine Corp Mustangs and enjoyed the comradeship of the Mustang organization.
He attended Beaufort Technical College earning an Associate Degree in Carpentry General Technology. He taught carpentry as a CETA (Comprehensive Employment Training Act) Coordinator and later JPTA (Job Training Partnership Training Act) Coordinator at the college. In early 1988 Mike ended his career as an instructor at the college.
Mike and Jean enjoyed retirement and traveled around the country. They visited friends and relatives often in their travels and attended many Mustang gatherings. Mike especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and cherished the many family reunions at the family cabin in North Carolina.
The family will receive friends and relatives Thursday, August 5th, 2021, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. at Copeland Funeral Service - One Copeland Drive.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, August 5th, 2021, at 10:00 A.M. at the Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors.
