BEAUFORT - Malcom A. McNall Jr., Lt. Col United States Air Force (RET.), 93, of Beaufort, South Carolina, and husband of Effie Greene McNall, died Monday, July 21, 2014 at his residence. Joe was born in Burlington, Vermont, on April 5, 1921, a son of the late Malcolm A. McNall and the late Mary H. McNall. Joe and his sister Mary grew up in Malden, Massachusetts. He lived with his family until entering the Army Air Corps during WWII. He served as a fighter pilot, flying the P-40 and P-47 in North Africa and Italy. Joe married his wife Elizabeth in 1943. After the war Joe served in Korea and later he and his family were stationed in Okinawa, Japan. In 1967 Joe retired from the Air Force and began work at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls, NY. He later worked as Director of the Physical Plant at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY, until he retired. Joe and Betty moved to Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1983, where they enjoyed the warmth, friendship and community of the Lowcountry for the past 31 years. Joe was active in St. Peter's Catholic Church on Lady's Island serving as a lector and committee member for various driving committees at St. Peter's. He also volunteered for many years at Help of Beaufort and Meals on Wheels. Joe was an avid golfer who also belonged to the Carolina Coastal Seniors' Golf Association. Joe pursued his love of aviation through his long-standing membership with the QBs and by serving as a founding member of the 79th Fighter Group. Joe was predeceased by his wife Betty in 2013. He married EffieGreene in January, 2014. Surviving Joe is his wife, Effie; his four children, Mike, and his wife, Kathy, Jan, Peter and his wife, Emma, and Scott, and his wife, Sharron; step-children David, and his wife, Kristina, and Scott, and his wife Tisha; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The family will greet Joe's friends at Copeland Funeral Home from 2 until 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 10:30 o'clock Monday morning, with burial immediately following at the National Cemetery.
