Marvin Henry Dukes, Jr, died on November 28, 2015 at his home in Beaufort, SC.

Born May 10th 1935, in Beaufort, SC, Mr. Dukes was the son of the late Marvin Henry Dukes and Sadie Sanders Dukes.  He was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. After his graduation from South Carolina School of Law in 1959 he returned to Beaufort to practice. Mr. Dukes legal career spanned over 45 years and included many wonderful associations and partnerships with some of the state's finest lawyers. Mr. Dukes was a lifetime member of the Parish Church of St Helena, serving on the vestry and as a lay reader.  He was chairman of the University of South Carolina Higher Education Commission, for which he received the Distinguished Service Award.  He was Chairman of the Beaufort Academy Board of Directors and Commodore of the Beaufort Water Festival.  He served on the board of the Beaufort County Airport Commission and as a director of South Carolina Federal Savings and Loan Bank.  He was instrumental in the founding of the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club where he served as both Commodore and Chairman of the Board for multiple terms.  He was a founder and the first President of the John Ribaut Society and a member of The Thursday Club. Mr. Dukes was a lifetime member and past Commodore of the Beaufort Yacht Club and an avid USC fan, serving as the Vice-Chairman of the Gamecock Club.

Mr. Dukes delighted in his family, friends and the Low Country.  He enjoyed boating and was a voracious reader and story teller

Mr. Dukes is survived by his wife of 55 years, Priscilla Jones Dukes; four sons, Marvin Henry Dukes III (Laura), William Weston Jones Dukes (Elizabeth), Edward Sanders Dukes, and John Nolte Dukes (Katie), and five grandchildren, William Weston Jones Dukes, Virginia Nolte Dukes, Priscilla Campbell Dukes, John Nolte Dukes, Jr., and Merris Hall Dukes.

A memorial service will be held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at the Parish Church of St. Helena.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice - 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC, 29935 or the St. Helena Preservation Trust - Post Office Box 1043, Beaufort, SC  29901.
