BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Mary Lou Schuster, 82, of Beaufort and formerly of Florence, SC, and Clinton, Iowa, died Friday, June 29, 2012, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston after a fall at home. Mary Lou was born February 11, 1930, in Clinton, Iowa, to the late Ira and Norma Huenhold Iversen. Lou attended Clinton High School where she was a drum majorette and led the Clinton High School band. She was the l947 River Kings homecoming queen. She graduated nursing school from Jane Lamb Hospital and worked as their operating room supervisor. She was eight years past president of the Florence Area Humane Society and was responsible for the first no-kill shelter in the Florence area. Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 59 years, John T. Schuster. She is also survived by six children, Terry S. Nash (Mike) of Beaufort, SC; Tom Schuster of Beaufort, SC; Jim Schuster (Helene) of Florence, SC; Bob Schuster (Phyllis) of Anderson, SC; Janet Ray (Alan) of Columbia, SC; and Bill Schuster (Jane) of Florence, SC. Mary Lou was a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren, Ryian Nash Smith of Greer, SC; Lee Nash of Beaufort, SC; Taylor Schuster of Charleston, SC; Kelly, Sayler and Kyle Schuster of Anderson, SC; John and Meg Ray, of Columbia, SC; and Nick and Ashlin Schuster of Florence, SC. She has one great grandson, Palmer Nash Smith of Greer, SC. Mary Lou is also survived by two sisters, Bette Coombs of Estes Park, CO; and Trudy Rider (Tom) of St. Louis, MO; and one brother, Ira Iversen of Fort Lauderdale, Fl. A memorial service for Mary Lou will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 5th at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Entombment will follow the service at the Church's columbarium. The family of Mary Lou will receive friends at the Church following the service. Remembrances may be made in Mary Lou Schuster's name to your local animal shelter.
