Mary Elizabeth 'Liz' Selden Taylor of Spartanburg and Fripp Island, SC passed away June 17, 2017 with family by her side, at her home on Fripp Island.
Born Nov. 4, 1925 in Athens, TN, she was preceded in death by her parents Winston Adams Selden and Willie Helen Roberts Selden, and her brother William R. Selden. Liz and late husband James Archibald Taylor of 63 yrs.
She was an active and founding member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. She supported her children's Scouting activities, including organizing the first Girl Scout Troop on the East Side of Spartanburg where she served as troop leader. An avid golfer, she was a member of the South Carolina Ladies Golf Association, and served in various leadership roles, including Pres. of the Lan-Yair Country Club Ladies Golf Assoc. She enjoyed weekly and monthly gatherings of her Bridge Clubs, as well as the occasional bridge tournament.
She graduated from University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1948, with a double major in Psychology and Biology, and attended both Tennessee Wesleyan College and Vanderbilt University. She taught Biology briefly before starting her 'career' raising her family. She is remembered for her positive, lighthearted laughter, and spirited ways that brought joy to all those around her.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Taylor Murray and husband Thomas of North, VA; son, Dr. William Stokes Taylor and wife Mary Jo of Wellington, New Zealand; three grandchildren, Joseph Rosser Taylor, Carmen Oller Taylor, Dr. William Selden Taylor and wife Erin and great-granddaughter Florence Elizabeth, all of New Zealand.
The remains will be interred at a later date in the Fripp Island All Faiths Chapel Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 400 Dupree Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307, or to the Friends of Caroline Hospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC 29935.
