LADY'S ISLAND - Retired Major General Charles Echols "Pete" Spragins, age 90, of Beaufort, SC died Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at home. He was born on April 11, 1923 in Colon, Panama to the late MG Robert L. Spragins and Marguerite Spragins. He graduated from West Point in 1945 and proudly served his country for 32 years in the U.S. Army as an Airborne/Ranger and proudly wore his black beret. Pete was the embodiment of "Duty, Honor, and Country". He served in two wars and raised 5 children across several continents, and is grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He spent a lifetime in service to country, service to family, and service to the community. He retired in Beaufort in 1977 and founded General Business Services where he served as a financial advisor to the community.
On January 29, 1947, he married Joyce Dingley who died on December 6, 1984. He is survived by Cena Walker Spragins who he married in 1986 in Beaufort. He is also survived by his children; Elizabeth (John) Russell, Ellyn (John) Spragins Witty, Charles, Jr. (Vania), Joyce (Brook) Spragins Gardner, Cricket (Thomas) Lind, Vicki (Chris) Copeland, his brother Stewart V. Spragins, and his beloved dog, Annie. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Spragins, Jr.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at the Parish Church of St. Helena. Burial will follow at 12 noon at Beaufort National Cemetery with Army honors.
