LADY'S ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - Ralph Davis Jr., died Sunday, September 29, 2013, at home on Lady's Island, SC after a long illness.
The son of the late Ralph Davis Sr. and Anna Lee Glover Davis , he was born in Charleston, SC and grew up on Wadmalaw Island. He is preceded in death by a son, William Clinton Davis, formerly of Gig Harbor, WA. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Carolyn J. Davis, a sister Bette D. Mann and brother Robert Hugh Davis (Alden) of Charlotte NC, daughter Ellen D. Padgett (Racine) of Okatie, a son Ralph Davis, III (Petra) of Lakeland, FL, step-daughter Angela B. Ramage (son Taylor) of Savannah, GA, step-son William Bowen, Jr. of New York, NY, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog Grit.
After graduating from St. John's High School, John's Island SC, Mr. Davis entered Clemson University where he received his B.S. Degree in 1949. In 1951, he entered the USAF and earned his commission and wings, serving as an all-weather fighter pilot during the Korean Conflict. Following his service, Mr. Davis entered Clemson's graduate school in 1955, earning a Master's in Agricultural Science, then went on to receive an Educational Specialist Degree at Western Carolina University.
First a teacher at Beaufort High School, then principal of Beaufort Jr. High School for 7 years, Mr, Davis served the next 25 years as a principal of the USMC Dependent School at Laural Bay, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Davis was a member and elder at Sea Island Presbyterian Church, a charter member and past president of Beaufort Civitan, charter member and first president of the Beaufort County Fair, charter member and past president of Beaufort Beagle Club, Honorary member and past president of Beaufort Rotary Club, past president of SAR (Sons of the American Revolution, member and past president of HELP of Beaufort. He was a feature writer with "The Beaufort Gazette" and "Low Country Ledger". He drew on his Low Country lifetime experiences in his popular "Outdoors" columns. He was an accomplished raconteur, apiarist, conservationist and outdoorsmans.
The family will receive friends Thursday, October 3, from 5 until 7 o'clock at Copeland Funeral Service.
The memorial service will be Friday, October 4, at 11 o'clock at Sea Island Presbyterian Church on Lady's Island.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of Caroline Hospice - 1110 13th Street, Port Royal South Carolina.
