Randolph Harrison Smith passed away Friday, June 30, 2017 at home. He was born September 9, 1946 and is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman Harrison Smith of High Point, NC. He was a graduate of High Point Central High School in 1963. He earned a highly coveted Hardwood Lumber Inspector Certification from the National Hardwood Lumber Association Inspector Training School in Memphis, TN. Randy was a proud Veteran and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967-70. He graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC. He was a purchasing agent and then a courier in the Vietnam War. He returned to the US and was Vice President of McEwen Lumber Company based in High Point, NC. He was responsible for managing the salesforce at the branches on the east coast.
Hammermill Paper Company bought out McEwen Lumber in 1981, and he continued working there for a short time. He then opened Randy's Outdoorsman Shop with an indoor gun range in 1982 because of his love for hunting, fishing, and people. Randy never met a stranger and enjoyed running his shop for many years. After having open heart surgery in 1994, he traveled to Montana to continue recuperation which engendered his love for the Montana landscape.
Randy and his wife Mary Allen Smith have always believed in giving back to their communities and are longtime supporters of education, veterans, their church, and numerous families in need. They are members of The Baptist Church of Beaufort, SC. Whether helping children in Montana or Veterans in South Carolina Randy felt a true calling to help those in need. His zest for life and larger than life personality was an inspiration to all.
He is survived by his wife Mary Allen Smith of Saint Helena Island, SC, daughter Margaret Huntley Smith Bass and husband Kristopher Lee Bass of Winston-Salem, NC, daughter Louise Smith Gaines and husband Kevin Lee Gaines of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and children Joshua Lee Gaines and Elise Holland Gaines. Stepson Donald Lynn Allen and wife Suzanne Anderson Allen of Anthem, AZ and children Samantha Lynn Allen, Erika Lynn Allen, and ZacharyChristian Allen. Stepson Steven Douglas Allen and wife Courtney Summer Allen of Cumming, GA. Randy was predeceased in death by his sister Linda McEwen Smith.
A celebration of life will be held at The Baptist Church of Beaufort, SC on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 2 pm. The family will receive friends after the service.
