Robert Austin Jones, age 77, of Beaufort, SC passed away at his home under Hospice care on Wednesday morning, August 30th, after a brief illness.
His son, Bret Allen Jones, and his devoted partner, Diane Senger Schmid, were at his side.
Born June 13, 1940 in NYC, the only child of Austin William Jones (deceased) and Antoinette Rita Melillo (deceased), Robin (Rob) grew up in Bergen County, graduating from Ramsey H.S. in 1958. He attended Yale University, spent 2 years in the US Army stationed in Korea, and then graduated from Yale University. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in1968, and joined the Law firm of Hunziker, Hunziker & Stein in Paterson, NJ.
He maintained a branch office in West Milford, NJ and became a managing partner at Hunziker, Jones & Sweeney, working at their Wayne, NJ location until his retirement in 2014. Rob was an avid golfer, skier, sailor, hiker, reader and lover of life! He was active in Rotary International, serving as President of the West Milford Rotary and as West Milford School Board Attorney. Rob participated in and supported the annual Bobby Jones Open Golf Tournament for 33 years, raising funds for Syringomyelia which caused the death of legendary golfer Bobby Jones, in his later years. Rob and Diane fell in love with the marshes, Live Oaks and beauty of Beaufort, SC, purchasing a home and moving there in 2014, where Rob enjoyed golfing, his boat, Gemini II, and joining and volunteering at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort. He loved working with the kids at Thumbs Up, a local organization supporting children in an after-school program.
Rob is survived by his only child, Bret Allen Jones of Trinidad, CA, Bret's wife Amy, and his two granddaughters, Sadie LLover Jones and Beyla Rue Jones, his devoted partner, Diane Senger Schmid, of Beaufort, SC, and his former wife and mother of Bret Allen, Anne Crosse Bowman, of Morristown and Lake Hawthorne, NJ. He was a father figure to Jennifer Longmere of Concord, NH and Tara Wear of Spokane, WA, daughters of Sue Hunt of Sparta, NJ, and to Cheri Foltz of Portland, OR, Dee Bass of Fortine, MT and Dawn Harrison of Atlanta, GA, daughters of his second wife Ann Bass of Hendersonville, NC. Rob was predeceased by his beloved dog, Kiran, last September.
He leaves many friends from his interesting and active life who will miss him, his twinkling eyes, great smile and love of life!
