ST. HELENA ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA - Robert George Short, 79, of St. Helena Island and husband of Marlene Meinke Short, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at his residence after a valiant battle with cancer.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, March 26, 2013, at St. John's Lutheran Church on Lady's Island followed by a reception at the Dataw Island Club.
He was born July 23, 1933 to the late Esther and George Short in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Bob graduated in 1945 from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. Bob met his wife, Marlene Meinke, of 59 years while attending the University of Nebraska. He worked in sales for Union Carbide in New York City while residing in Connecticut. Bob also worked for Charles S. Tanner in Greenville, South Carolina as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, for A.Z.S. Corporation as President in Atlanta, Georgia, and for Wacker Chemical in Adrian, Michigan as Vice President of Marketing and Sales. In 1986, he retired and moved to Dataw Island, South Carolina. Bob enjoyed playing golf, gardening, and many good friends. He continued to follow his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Survivors include Marlene Meinke Short of Dataw Island; children, Mark (Jeannie) Short of El Paso, Texas, Kevin (Suzanne) Short of Greenville, S.C., Craig (Kelley) Short of Simpsonville, S.C., and Kim (Allen) Rioux of Sylvania, Ohio; grandchildren, Amy (Eddie) Gonzalez, Ryan Short, Christopher (Lena) Short, Michael (Elizabeth) Short, Elizabeth Sullivan Short, Sarah Katherine Short, Laughton Louisa Short, Steven Conner Short, Kendyll Elizabeth Short, Robert Colin Rioux, Nicholas Allen Rioux and William Alexander Rioux,, and two great-grandchildren, Madilynn and Sydney Gonzalez.
