Ruby Danner Hryharrow, 97, affectionately known as "Dee" or "Grandee" by her many friends and family, died in peace at Beaufort Memorial Hospital on January 26, 2016, after a short illness. She was born in Columbia, SC, to Howard Ellis Danner and Ruby Cummings Danner and grew up in Beaufort. She graduated from Westhampton College and Pratt Institute. Dee was predeceased by her husband, John Stanley Hryharrow, and by a son, John Ellis Hryharrow. She is survived by her son, Howard Danner Hryharrow of Tampa, FL; her daughter, Dale H. Friedman, married to Philip Fairbanks, of Beaufort; a daughter in law, Leslie Hamilton, of Durham, NC; and by four grandsons: Gregory Hryharrow of Allentown, PA; Elliott Friedman and his wife, Nicole Mason, of San Francisco, CA; Danner Friedman and his wife, Elizabeth of Charleston, SC; Porter Friedman and his wife, Joslyn Gibson, of Portland OR; and by a great granddaughter and namesake, Ruby Friedman of Charleston, SC. Dee was an accomplished watercolorist and portraitist, whose pastels of several generations of Beaufortonians grace the walls of many homes in Beaufort and the Lowcountry, a successful realtor, a member of Clover club for over 50 years, a devoted member of her church, and a world traveler. She was a woman with a sparkling sense of humor who was held dear by many members of our community who knew her through her work and her civic involvement. She watched with interest as the Beaufort she lived in for just shy of a century changed from a relatively sleepy, rural Southern agricultural town to one of the most recognized small towns in America. She was a gracious lady who enriched the lives of all who were lucky enough to have known and loved her. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 4 p.m. at The Parish Church of St. Helena's in Beaufort. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Historic Beaufort Foundation - Post Office Box 11, Beaufort, South Carolina 29901.
