BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Sally Justine Mitchell of Beaufort, South Carolina passed away at her home on Sunday, August 25, 2013.
She was born July 2, 1929 in New York City, daughter of Henry Coggeshall Howells and Lilly Ward Ruperti.
After graduating from the Chapin School in New York City, she attended Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia, PA, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She worked with the American Field Service (now AFS Intercultural Programs) supporting students traveling abroad on AFS cultural exchanges. Mrs. Mitchell was the original owner of Loafers Bakery in Locust Valley, NY. She married the late S. Alexander Mitchell in 1965 and resided in Locust Valley, NY. In 1986, Mrs. Mitchell moved to South Carolina ultimately settling in Beaufort.
A humanitarian and philanthropist, Mrs. Mitchell was active with the League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood, Mobile Meals, and was on the boards of the Historic Beaufort Foundation, the Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse (CODA), and the Coastal Conservation League.
Sally J. Mitchell always will be remembered for her generosity of heart, sharing of knowledge and especially feisty spirit.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews Henry Howells IV, Richmond, VA, Kathryn Howells M.D., LaCrosse, WI, Julie Avelon, Cumberland Foreside, ME, William Howells, Silver Spring, MD, her step children, Stephen Mitchell, Beaufort, SC, Diana Mitchell, Lolo, MT, Jennifer Mitchell, Blue Hill, ME, Robert Mitchell, Oyster Bay, NY, and Laura Mitchell, York, ME, 12 great nieces and nephews, and 8 step grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5o'clock Saturday afternoon, September 28th, at 200 Millstone Drive on St. Helena.
In lieu of flowers, it was Sally's wishes that any memorials be sent to Lowcountry Food Bank - 8 Guess Road, Yemassee, South Carolina 29945-6406 or the Historic Beaufort Foundation - Post Office Box 11, Beaufort, South Carolina 29901.
