BEAUFORT AND CHARLESTON - Stanley Bernard Farbstein, 88, of Beaufort and Charleston, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, at Summit Place of Beaufort, South Carolina.
Stanley was born in Beaufort and was a son of the late Casper and Esther Getz Farbstein. He attended schools in Beaufort, graduating from Beaufort High school in June 1942. Stanley graduated from Clemson Agricultural College, (now Clemson University) in June 1947, with degrees of Bachelor of Chemical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Stanley served in the United States Army during World War II.
Stanley was employed by Phillips Petroleum and the BF Goodrich Company. He participated in development, design and operation of several new and improved processes in petrochemical, synthetic rubber and plastic industries, including what was at the time the largest ethylene plant in the world. Stanley was project manager for the design and construction of the first commercial circulating fluidized bed coal boiler in the U.S.- this provided an environmentally and economically acceptable method to burn high sulfur coal, and the technology involved has since been used in a number of large industrial and utility boilers in the U.S. and worldwide. In 1985, Stanley retired as Director of Energy Affairs at the BF Goodrich Company. Subsequently, he was self-employed as a consultant in fuel and energy supply and utilization. He was a registered Professional Engineer. He was also a member, Emeritus of both American Chemical Society and American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Stanley was a member and on the Executive Board of Beth Israel Synagogue. He was a member of B'nai B'rith. He was also a member and on the Advisory Board of the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston and member and on the Board of the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina.
Stanley is survived by a sister Frances F. Wolff of Mill Valley, CA; two nephews Roger Wolff of Salt Lake City, UT and Victor Wolff of Carlsbad, CA; and a niece Jessica Wolff of Carlsbad, CA.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Beth Israel Cemetery.
