DATAW ISLAND - The Honorable Clifford T. Harrigan of Dataw Island, SC and formerly of Schenectady, NY died on December 17, 2014 holding the hand of his wife and best friend Gracie. He was 86 years old. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Grace A. Harrigan, his five children Kevin (Nancy) Harrigan of Schenectady, NY, William (Jill) Harrigan of Georgetown, KY, Carol Lupo of Schenectady, NY, Dr. Patricia (Dr. Gordon) Hardenbergh of Edwards, CO, and Annie Harrigan of Nantucket, MA, fourteen cherished grandchildren: Christopher and Kelly Harrigan, Luke and Lucy Harrigan, Kelsey and Aaron Lupo, Hannah, Dylan, Ian, and Katy Jane Hardenbergh, Ian and Molly Dooley, Charlie Harrigan and Gracie Cabral. He was preceded in death by his father Clifford J. Harrigan and mother Anne T. Flynn Harrigan.
He graduated from Siena College in 1950 and Albany Law School in 1953 earning a Juris Doctor of Law degree. He served in the US Army with the Judge Advocates Office in Austria.
He returned to Schenectady to practice law and was associated with: McDonald King, Esq.; and the law firms of Maynard, O'Connor and Smith; Mullarkey, Horigan and Harrigan; and Lewis, Lynch, Harrigan and Bates. He also served as a law clerk in Schenectady City Court, under the Hon. Chatfield T. Bates for two years, and as assistant district attorney twice under Howard A. Levine and then John B. Poersch.
He was elected to a four year term to the Schenectady County Board of Representatives in 1971. He was appointed, then elected Schenectady Police Court Justice, then elected Schenectady County Court Judge in 1984. He served on the bench for over 14 years with integrity, justice and compassion.
He served as president of the Schenectady County Bar Association and represented Schenectady County to the New York State Bar Association House of Delegates. Over the years he served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. He was a long time member of the Mohawk Golf and lower Mohawk Clubs.
He retired in 1995 and continued to serve as a Judicial Hearing Officer by appointment of the New York State Office of Court Administration in Supreme Court, County Court, and Family Court.
He was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist (Schenectady, NY) and then St. Peter's (Beaufort, SC). Most of all he was a loyal friend, man of faith, loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. He was a fan for the NY football Giants, the NY Yankees and any team his children and grandchildren were playing on. He loved vacationing on Nantucket Island, MA with his family for 46 straight years including this past summer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 22, at 11:30 o'clock at St. Peter's Catholic Church - 70 Lady's Island Drive, Beaufort, South Carolina. Interment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, New York at a later date.
