Wilbur Henry Jackson

d. January 6, 2022

W. Henry Jackson, 87, of Beaufort, SC passed away on January 5, 2022. He was born in Orangeburg, SC, on July 11, 1934, to the late E.K. and Virginia Buckheister Jackson.

Henry's family moved to Beaufort when he was 6 months old, and he spent his entire life enjoying water activities in his idyllic home with many happy days spent at the camp on Pritchard's Island. He attended schools in Beaufort and graduated from the University of South Carolina, remaining a loyal Gamecock fan through thick and thin (mostly thin).

He married his beloved Peggy in 1961, and enjoyed his days with her until her death in January, 2019. Their son Bryan, the light of their lives, passed away in December, 2011.

His professional career included serving as Beaufort County Auditor from 1962 to 1977 and Beaufort County Clerk of Court from 1977 to 1999. Henry was highly respected and seemed to spin magic as he accommodated the many judges and lawyers with whom he served. As testimony to his tremendous service, a beautiful portrait of Henry now hangs in the Beaufort County Courthouse.

He was active in the community having served as president of the Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce, Beaufort Lions Club, and the South Carolina Association of Assessing Officials. He was a member of the Army National Guard and also was Commodore of the 1967 Beaufort Water Festival.

One of Henry's greatest loves was music. He played the trumpet in the Beaufort High band, sang in the Beaufort Choral Society and was a choir member at The Baptist Church of Beaufort for over 50 year. His beautiful voice graced many weddings and funerals, and he was best known for his tender rendition of 'Sweet Little Jesus Boy' every Christmas at his church.

In addition to music, Henry enjoyed golf, most especially with his buddies in the 911 golf group. He loved to read and included a wide selection of authors among his favorites. He and Peggy were gracious hosts, and they frequently opened their home for fun and entertaining social gatherings.

Henry was a master storyteller, and his infectious sense of humor was a gift to all who knew him. He never forgot a name of a fact, and rich stories of his much-love hometown and its 'characters' were his hallmark. His infectious laugh will, indeed, be missed.

He was predeceased by his wife Peggy, his son Bryan, and his brothers William and Ernest He is survived by his grandson Garret Jackson of Beaufort and his brother George of Thomasville, NC. He is also survived by nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, some of whom lovingly cared for him in his last days.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be at The Baptist Church of Beaufort, 602 Charles Street at 2:00 on Saturday, January 8th. Memorials may be made to The Baptist Church of Beaufort Endowment Fund, PO Box 879, Beaufort, SC 29901.
