William McClellan ('Bill') Evans passed away December 11, 2019 at his home on Lady's Island.
A graveside service and interment of ashes for family and close friends will be held at Beaufort Memorial Gardens/Copeland Funeral Home (One Copeland Drive in Beaufort) on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 10 A.M, conducted by Pastor Steve Keeler. Following the service, a memorial and celebration of life will be held at The Port Royal Sound Foundation (310 Okatie Hwy in Okatie/Lemon Island) beginning at 11:30 A.M., followed by a reception on site and opportunity to visit with the family. An additional service will be held in York, Pennsylvania in 2020.
Evans was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland on May 9, 1947. He was the son of the late Dr. Robert Llwellyn Evans and Margaret Davis Evans and grew up in York, Pennsylvania. He attended Tabor Academy and received undergraduate degrees in both history and biological sciences from Rutgers University. He received a master's degree in teaching and curriculum from Penn State University and completed additional post-graduate and doctoral work in education administration and leadership at the University of Southern California. Evans began his career in education as teacher and coach with the West York School District in York, PA. After serving as a graduate assistant at USC, he served as the assistant principal of Washington Junior High School and the principal of Salinas High School, both part of the Salinas Unified School District in Salinas, California. Evans became the principal of Hilton Head High School in 1986 and served that school and community for 12 years before moving on to additional principal roles and district level leadership positions with the Beaufort County Schools. Following his retirement, Evans was elected to the Beaufort County Board of Education in 2011 and served as the board chairman from 2013-2015. Evans had a lifelong love of golf and played in two NCAA championships, along with multiple amateur championships. He was deeply involved in community service around Beaufort County, including membership and leadership in Rotary Club of the Lowcountry, United Way, AMI Kids, Neighborhood Outreach Connection, Port Royal Sound Foundation, and First Tee.
Evans was preceded in death by his first wife, Cathy (Leary) Evans; his eldest grandchild, Hanna Evans (Simpsonville KY); and his brother, Richard Evans (York, PA).
He is survived by his wife Melissa Hammond Hislop Evans of Beaufort and his children Dr. Kate Gentry (Randy) of Clemmons, NC; Rob Evans (Jennifer) of Simpsonville, KY; Krissy Evans of Portland, OR; David Hislop (Faith) of Rutherfordton, NC; Dr. Jenna Hislop, of Bronx, New York. His eight grandchildren: Hanna, Sarah, Ella, Raquel, Grace, Maggie, Davis, Camden, and Eliana, were the great joys of his life.
