BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA - Wren Gregorie Rawls, 84, went home to God on 18 September 2013 at home in Beaufort, South Carolina.
She was the beloved wife of L. Russell Rawls and devoted mother of Lucian R. (Luke) Rawls (of Virginia), Gregorie M. (Greg) Rawls (of Beaufort), and Lucia Rawls Schoelwer (of Virginia). She also is survived by her brother, Isaac McPherson Gregorie (of Baton Rouge, LA), son-in-law Michael H. Schoelwer, three step-granddaughters - Kathleen Schoelwer Jacoby, Deborah Schoelwer Ehlers and Julia Schoelwer (all of Virginia), and many nieces and grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews, cousins and her granddog Oliver.
She was a faithful member of The Parish Church of St. Helena (Anglican) and served as a Docent and worked with the Altar Guild there for many years. She was born in Denmark, SC to Anna Matthews and Isaac McPherson Gregorie. Russ and Wren married in 1947 at Ft. McPherson, GA and Wren spent the first thirty years of her married life as a devoted Army wife and mother, creating a warm and loving home and serving as a gracious hostess wherever Russ' career took them. She epitomized simple elegance, instilled in us a sense of tradition and graciousness, and inspired us with her strong spirit. She attended Winthrop College and the University of Rhode Island. Her primary career was her family, but she also enjoyed her time working at The State Newspaper and the College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina in Columbia before Russ and Wren moved to Beaufort in 1999. She was a lifelong learner and voracious reader. She was a talented seamstress, loved traveling, and was an avid bridge player. She found solace in gardening all her life and regularly filled their home and the church with magnificent flower arrangements. Wren had a wonderful sense of humor, profound sense of family, and touched more lives than we can count. She was our "stainless steel magnolia" and we will miss her mightily.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 o'clock Sunday evening, September 22nd, at the home - 11-A Rising Tide Drive, Beaufort.
The funeral service will be held at St. Helena's on Monday, 23 September at 2 o'clock, with a reception following at the church - 505 Church Street, Beaufort.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Parish Church of St. Helena (Anglican).
